Best Practices

In general, water hardness can have an adverse effect on release performance. Cations complex with fatty acid salts creating ‘soap scum.’ Soap scum then plugs filters and nozzles, reducing the efficacy of the release agent, and necessitating higher dosages. Onsite water treatment is recommended for each mill to maximize performance. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems are the preferred method for water treatment. Properly working RO systems yield less than 10 mS/cm, essentially 0 conductivity.

If RO filtration is not possible, PSG recommends hardness of less than 60 PPM based on Calcium Carbonate levels. The Water Quality Association categorizes water hardness as follows:

  • To prevent foaming, perform air unloading. This preferred method uses a standard siphon break at the top entry of the storage tank, with an angled pipe to divert material downside of the tank.
  • Continuous agitation is recommended, either with a top blade impeller (low shear) or recirculation.
  • Annually inspect the tank to check the integrity and sediment buildup, and clean as necessary.
  • If storing the product in tote bins, choose a storage area that has low traffic, easy access, and relatively stable ambient temperatures (avoid storing near entryways).
  • Inspect the unloading station, storage tank, bulk delivery pump, and transfer hose. In case of tote bin storage, check the storage area and transfer station.
  • Inspect flow meter, and pump flow and pressure calibration.
  • Flush static mix system and inspect piping for leaks.
Inspect spray nozzles for wear, correct sizing, and spacing.
  • Conduct on-site water quality inspection.
Checking filters on down days (minimum once a week).
