CLEVELAND, OH (April 13, 2023) — Polymer Solutions Group (PSG), a polymer additive, dispersion, and release agent manufacturer, today announced that Dr. Gabriel N. Short, Product Innovation Chemist, will speak at the Clemson University Global Tire Industry Conference in Greenville, South Carolina, on Wednesday, April 19. During Session 4, “Innovations in Tire Materials,” Short will lead a paper titled “Improvement in Process Stability of Silica Tread Compounds: How the Novel Chemistry of SureMix® S6 Can Protect a Silica Filled Tread Compound from Process Upsets & High Temperatures.”
Dr. Short’s presentation will touch on the sources of instability in silica tread compound manufacturing and how SureMix® S6 can mitigate process upsets while optimizing physical and dynamic properties. To simulate mixing process upsets, Dr. Short exposed the compounds to high-temperature silanization. His study shows how SureMix® S6 can be effectively used to maintain processability and reduce scrap while optimizing compound performance.
“Enabling high-temperature Silanization with SureMix® sets a new performance benchmark,” said Aaron Puhala, Vice President of Innovation. “Tire manufacturers are using SureMix® to help them develop compounds having best-in-class processability and performance with an expanded processing window that helps mitigate process upsets. SureMix® is a great example of how PSG is committed to providing our customers with the material technologies they need to meet the ever-increasing challenges of today and fuel their aspirations for the future.”
As PSG’s Product Innovation Chemist, Dr. Short leverages his materials, chemical synthesis, characterization, and processing expertise to devise sustainable synthesis routes for target chemistries. In addition, he conducts experiments to optimize existing synthesis methodologies and develop new synthesis approaches for the next generation of products. Dr. Short has an M.S. and Ph.D. in Organic Polymer Chemistry from the University of Florida and did postdoctoral research at the Georgia Institute of Technology, focusing on carbon capture. He received his B.A. in Chemistry at the University of San Diego, receiving the Undergraduate Researcher Award. Prior to his postdoc tenure, he taught chemistry as an adjunct professor at Santa Fe College.
From its new Greenville, South Carolina location, the Clemson University Global Tire Industry Conference will occur from April 18-20, 2023. Register for the conference online at www.clemsontireconference.com.
